SKIN TUMOURS: LIPOMA, SEBACEOUS CYST, NEVUS, BALL UNDER THE SKIN

Benign skin tumors (lipomas, cysts, nevi) are a common reason for consultation in cosmetic surgery in Paris. These lesions can be easily removed under local anesthesia and are not considered harmful.

THE LIPOME

A lipoma is a ball of fat located in the surface layer of the skin. Lipoma is the non-cancerous tumor of the soft tissues the most common.

Lipomas can appear during the course of a lifetime and gradually grow in size.

There are several types of lipoma :

  • Superficial lipoma: located in superficial subcutaneous tissue;
  • Deep lipoma: in deep tissues ;
  • Intramuscular lipoma: inside a muscle.

Some lipomas can even be located under the muscle or in the muscle (forehead, back) and even on the scalp.

Lipomatosis is a disease in which the patient presents diffuse lipomas (arms, legs, back, trunk...).

When the lipoma has progressed too rapidly (increasing in volume within a few months), the surgeon may order an imaging test such as ultrasound or MRI.

In most cases, it is not necessary to remove a lipoma. However, itome patients present a face fat ball. That lump under the skin can be a real complex. It is then preferable to remove the lipoma.

SEBACEOUS CYST

The sebaceous cyst is a benign tumor made up mainly of sebum. It is the benign tumor the most common.

It forms in the sebaceous glands (or lymph nodes). The cause of sebaceous cyst is the accumulation of sebum under the skin. A sebaceous cyst has the appearance of a small, hard bump the color of the skin, sometimes slightly yellow or white.

A cyst can range from a few millimetres to several centimetres in width.

It's a skin cyst which presents little risk of complications.

This is one of the cysts most common skin conditionsIt is particularly easy to remove. For example, it is possible to empty the cyst by liposuction.

A distinction is made between sebaceous cysts :

  • Cold phase ;
  • Inflammatory ;
  • Infected.

It is not recommended to operate a infected sebaceous cyst or inflammatory phase. In general, to treat a cyst, all that's needed is a simple antibiotic treatment. Once the cyst has reached the cold phase, surgery can be performed.

Some patients present a face cyst. This cyst can be embarrassing and cause a complex. It is then preferable to remove it.

There are several types of cysts sebaceous cyst, trichilemmal cyst, pilonidal cyst, milium grain (microcyst)...

THE NAEVUS

A nevus is a "mole", a benign tumor made up of cells called melanocytes. Visit fair skins are more prone to nevi.

Its development into a malignant tumor, melanoma, is possible. Risk factors include sun exposure and sunburn repetitive. In these cases, a cancerous tumor composed of cancer cells may appear. It is a squamous cell carcinoma, the second type of skin cancer the most common.

Before undergoing surgery, it is preferable that the lesion be examined by a dermatologist with a scalp magnifier special.

Your Questions

Frequently Asked Questions in Consultation

WHO CAN REMOVE THIS TYPE OF TUMOUR?

plus moins

Minor dermatological surgery is available to dermatologists and dermatologists' surgeons. plastic surgeon or plastic.

These surgeries can be performed in the office or in the operating room, under the supervision of a surgeon. local anesthesia.

When the lipoma is too large, or the patient has a facial cyst, the surgeon prefers to perform the operation in the operating theatre, rarely under general anaesthetic.

CAN A LIPOMA BE REMOVED BY LIPOSUCTION?

plus moins

Technically, yes, it is possible to empty the lipoma by liposuction.

But this is not desirable, as the liposuction would enable fat cells to be aspirated, but would not prevent the risk of lipoma recurrence.

To avoid this risk, it is necessary to remove the entire lipoma with its envelope. Only a scar with a direct approach to the lesion allows this.

CAN SEVERAL TUMORS BE REMOVED IN ONE OPERATION?

plus moins

Yes, it's quite possible.

This requires local anesthesia of the various lesions. Thanks to anesthesia, the operation is generally painless.

However, the amount of anesthetic used is limited according to the patient's weight. A second procedure is possible if the patient has a lot of lesions.

If the lesions are too extensive or too numerous, an operation under general anaesthetic is also possible. Indeed, some patients may have lipomas covering their entire body.

WHAT KIND OF SCAR TO EXPECT?

plus moins

In general, the scar is approximately equal to the diameter of the lesion.

The scar is usually a thin line the size of the lesion.

On the other hand, some areas are less conducive to healing. This is particularly true of the back, arms and thighs, which are areas of high tension.

WHAT ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS AFTER SUCH SURGERY?

plus moins

Post-operative care is relatively straightforward.

You can shower with mild soap the day after the operation.

After drying the wound with a warm compressThe patient replaces a clean dressing.

Healing is complete after about two to three weeks.

During this period, bathing and swimming should be avoided to prevent maceration.

As soon as healing is complete, the wound can be left in the open air.

IS EXCISION OF THESE TUMORS COVERED?

plus moins

Yes.

Social security reimburses part of the cost of these procedures, particularly for facial cysts or lipomas. Whether the procedure is related to aesthetic reasons doesn't matter.

However, in cosmetic surgery and dermatology practices, doctors usually charge a higher fee.

The coverage of this excess fee is borne in part or in full by the mutual insurance company. Whether the operation is performed for aesthetic reasons or not is not taken into consideration.

In this way, the patient may have to pay for the remainder of the costs.
