Your Questions
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BREAST LIFT AFTER PREGNANCY
What's the difference between a breast lift and a breast augmentation?
- A breast lift (or mastopexy) is a procedure that lifts sagging breasts by removing excess skin. The aim is to improve the shape and position of the breasts.
- A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase breast size, generally by inserting breast prostheses or by lipofilling (fat injection).
What are the signs that post-pregnancy breast reconstruction surgery may be necessary?
A breast lift may be considered after pregnancy if the breasts are sagging, have lost their firmness or if the volume of the breasts has decreased significantly.
What are the different breast lift techniques available?
There are several breast lift techniques, the most common of which are :
- The inverted-T technique (or inverted anchor): designed to correct major skin excesses.
- The periareolar method The incision is only made around the areola, for a lighter lift.
- The vertical technique Inverted T technique: often used when skin excess is moderate, the incision is smaller than for the inverted T technique. In practice, this technique is rarely used.
What is the ideal weight for a breast lift?
There is no ideal weight, but it is advisable to be close to your ideal weight and to have had a stable weight for several months. Good general health is also a prerequisite for surgery.
A stable weight ensures that the results of the operation will be long-lasting, and that the skin will be elastic enough to re-drape properly after surgery.
Is it a painful procedure?
Breast lift surgery is generally well tolerated by patients. You will probably experience moderate pain in the first few days after the procedure. Your surgeon will prescribe mild painkillers to combat this.
Are the results of a breast lift permanent?
The results of a breast lift are long-lasting, but not permanent. Over time, the breasts will continue to evolve due to aging, weight variations, hormonal changes or possible future pregnancies. However, a breast lift significantly improves the appearance of the breasts, and the results can last for several years.
Breast lift and pregnancy: is it better to undergo the procedure before or after having all your children?
It's generally advisable to have a breast lift after you've had all your children. Pregnancy changes the shape and size of the breasts, which generally affects the results of the operation.
Can physical exercise help avoid a breast lift?
Physical exercise can help strengthen the pectoral muscles under the breasts, thereby improving breast firmness. The pectoral muscles can also have a slight breast-supporting effect.
However, exercises cannot totally correct sagging skin. A facelift remains the most effective solution for lifting sagging breasts.
